SWITCHBOARDS

Switchboards have been used since the invention of the telephone. Even after the introduction of automatic telephone switching in the early 1900s, huge manually operated switchboards have been used for many decades since. These manual exchanges were almost exclusively operated by women.

Switchboards typically used cords to make the connections, but later small switchboards also had switches.

Operators must have eavesdropped on many interesting conversations over the years!
