PHILIPS CARPHONE

Philips introduced carphone model AP4011 in 1987. At a weight of 4295 grams it is more transportable than portable. It has a 12V NiCd battery, but the draw on a car battery is so huge that users are recommended to use the phone only with the engine running! The phone used the now obsolete NMT network operating around 460 MHz. A 195 page manual of the similar AP4111 can be found on the manualslib.com website.

I have a model A4222, which is also known as MCR40, manufactured by Philips Radio Communication Systems (previously Pye Ltd) in Cambridge. It uses the TACS protocol, operating in the 900 MHz range. Voice communication is by FM, control signals are FSK.
